As of 1 February 2017, companies in South Australia will have to comply with new littering and nuisance offences introduced by the Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016. The Act seeks to reduce the prevalence of litter and improve management of local nuisance matters by introducing tiered littering offences with increased fines for non-compliance, formalizing local government's role in managing local nuisance matters, and increasing surveillance and enforcement powers of local and state authorities. While the Act commences on 1 February 2017, a number of specific provisions will not enter into force until 1 July 2016. This includes provisions concerning, for example, local nuisance offences, bill posting and certain sections of Schedule 2 which have the effect of making consequential amendments to various other pieces of legislation (such as the Summary Offences Act 1953).
