About the customer

  • Founded in 1987, CA Murren and Sons Co., Inc. is a heavy civil and industrial contractor serving clients across the southeastern United States, specializing in earthwork, utilities, industrial site development, and infrastructure projects.
  • As project volume grew across multiple active job sites, keeping hazard communication current and accessible to field supervisors, many without formal safety training – became central to sustaining the company’s safety culture.
  • Returning to full SDS compliance meant finding a system simple enough for non-specialists to use on the go, without adding administrative burden to already busy crews.

The challenges

Fragmented SDS records

When Safety Manager Jeffrey Sadler joined the Coastal Division, hazard communication records were scattered rather than centralized.

– “We needed to get back into compliance. We had to get all our SDSs in one spot”.

Non-specialist field supervisors

Site supervisors, most without formal safety credentials, needed a system they could understand and use without extensive training.

Right-sized for a focused inventory

The company’s chemical inventory was narrow and well-defined – diesel fuel, unleaded fuel, grease, hydraulic oil, pipe lube, and adhesives, so the solution needed to avoid unnecessary complexity for a small list

Why Enhesa SDS Manager

A trusted return

CA Murren had used the platform, now Enhesa SDS Manager, in the past and returned to it after researching alternatives.

– “I put myself in the shoes of our supervisors, it had to be simple”.

Fast, low-friction onboarding

The team’s historical records were retrieved, then quickly reviewed and updated.

Field-ready mobile access

QR-code posters and a preloaded mobile app meant field teams never had to leave the job site to find safety information.

Solution & implementation

Scope

All active project sites within the Coastal Division, standardized company-wide.

Roll-out

Historical SDS records were retrieved, the chemical list was reviewed and updated, then resubmitted in a single pass rather than a phased rollout.

– “The transition was easy. We went through the list, made changes, submitted it, and we were done”.

Jeffrey Sadler, Safety Manager, Coastal Division

Change management

QR-code posters are now posted at every site alongside other required signage, and the mobile app is preloaded on supervisors’ iPads as a company-wide standard.

Time-to-value

Full rollout was completed in a matter of weeks.

“We made it a standard across the board. Wherever we have a project, the QR code goes up with all of our other posters. It’s easy peasy”.

Business impact

  • Faster, more confident response during safety incidents — including a recent minor chemical exposure where field staff needed immediate access to chemical information
  • A repeatable, standard practice now applied automatically at every new project site

– “Our employees aren’t used to dealing with SDSs every day, so having something easy to use has been critical”.

“Back in the day, you had to carry a six-inch binder in your truck. Now it’s right there on your iPad. It works well”.
