About the customer

  • National OnDemand, Inc. delivers complete turnkey infrastructure services to the fiber, wireless, energy, and technology industries.
  • When Matt Rehlander joined as Corporate Director of EHS & Risk Management, he brought prior experience with Enhesa’s SDS management approach from previous roles and wanted the same consistency and reliability at National OnDemand.
  • Reliable, real-time access to safety information is central to meeting both employee safety and industry compliance standards across a distributed field workforce.

The Challenges

An unreliable, call-in system

Their previous provider required staff to call an 800 number and wait for a response each time an SDS was needed.

— “This wasn’t working for us and was not a reliable solution”.

No centralized SDS library

The prior service could not create a proper SDS library, leaving no single source of truth for the field.

Solution & implementation

Scope

Company-wide rollout across all National OnDemand locations, in place since 2019.

Roll-out

A QR code and site poster were made available at every location.

Change management

The QR code was extended beyond compliance use — printed on vehicle decals in company brand colors, and used by the marketing team to introduce product SDSs during the sales bidding process.

— “Adding the QR code feature, for us, has really transformed the process of quickly getting safety information. Being able to immediately access that critical information in the field has made all the difference. It’s just amazing!”

Matt Rehlander, Corporate Director of EHS & Risk Management

Time-to-value

Impact was demonstrated almost immediately: an on-site OSHA inspection took place just two weeks after implementation.

QR code and site poster feature

The QR code and poster feature stood out as particularly valuable for streamlining safety information access across all locations.

I had a site inspection from OSHA up in Washington state. We had the poster up on the job board with the QR code. The inspector was elated! He said the code was revolutionary.

Results & impact

Operational indicators

  • Instant, scannable access to safety information at every site and on every vehicle
  • A quick-report feature that lets the team pull exactly the information needed in a few clicks

Efficiency gains

  • Reduced time spent preparing and presenting safety documentation ahead of regulatory inspections
  • Marketing team repurposed the same QR codes to introduce products during the sales bidding process, extending the tool’s value beyond compliance

 Business impact

  • Passed an on-site OSHA inspection with a QR-code-equipped safety poster; the inspector scanned it directly with his phone and called the setup revolutionary
  • Strengthened company-wide confidence in inspection readiness across all locations

As most folks know, if your paperwork and your program information is upfront and ready to present, it makes the process of an OSHA inspection that much easier. And for the inspector to be able to just scan it with his phone, that was key.
